Indian-origin couple won 'Top American Award for AIDS Research

Johannesburg: The acclaimed researcher of Indian origin, Professor Salim Abdul Karim and Qureshi Abdul Karim, were honored with a prestigious award for their exceptional contribution in the field of World Class South African HIV / AIDS on Wednesday.


Researchers received the award from the Human Virology Institute (IHV) in Baltimore in the US.
This award was presented by Robert Gallo, who had discovered HIV as the cause of AIDS at the IVIV's 19th International Conference. Read: Physical activity and cancer - how are they connected?
Gallo said in a statement, "For me, these famous people have contributed the most in the history of HIV / AIDS in transit of public health and epidemiology and for the care of infected people."

Mr. Gallo said, "I do not know any person or individuals who have done anything to prevent HIV infection in the proper care of people with HIV infection or the population."
Salim Abdul Karim is the director of the Center for South Africa's AIDS Program (Caprice) and his associate professor Quaira Abdul Karim is a scientific director.

Researchers, who are currently involved in the development of new methods of preventing HIV in women, are both professors of epidemiology at Columbia University in New York and an honorary academician at the KwaZulu-Natal University in South Africa.

They show that antiretroviral can stop the transmission of HIV in 2010, when they shared the results of the Caprice 004 tanofoir gel test.

Historical studies were recognized as one of the top 10 scientific successes of the year.
The couple found that the Tennofovir gel prevents genital herpes. This was the first drug that proved effective against this disease.

"We not only accept the award on our behalf, but for the contribution of millions of South African people, as central to the research, better and more effective HIV prevention and treatment strategies," said Salim Abdul Karim. .
